Why Test for Gender?

Testing for gender in birds is very important for their future health.  Birds of different sexes exhibit different characteristics at different times.  If you know the sex of the bird, the veterinarian will have an easier time diagnosing symptoms.

Some of the most common reproductive diseases in female birds are:

bulletChronic egg laying /overproduction of eggs
bulletEgg binding/dystocia
bulletReproductive associated peritonitis
bulletCystic ovarian disease
bulletSalpingitis
bulletOviductal/cloacal prolapse
bulletUndesirable reproductive hormonal behaviors
bulletReproductive hormone related feather picking

Once a disease is diagnosed, surgery (salpingohysterectomy) is usually the most viable option for long term success.  In the cases that surgery is not an option, medical management can be instituted.
