Our “Getting to Know” series is intended to give you some fun insight into the people behind the medicine here at Exotic Vet Care. We hope you enjoy it! This entry features our Practice Manager Kerry Bateman.
1. What brought you to Exotic Vet Care?
Dr. Biascoechea hired me based on my managerial experience. I have always been interested in animals, especially native wildlife as I grew up in this area surrounded by all of its intriguing local fauna. I especially loved catching frogs as a child, though I quickly learned they don’t appreciate being held captive and to respect them by watching, not grabbing. I have learned an incredible amount about veterinary medicine in my 17 years at Exotic Vet Care.
2. What’s the craziest thing you have seen at Exotic Vet Care?
That’s a tough question as we get so many interesting patients and special cases, but here’s a memorable tale: we had a tarantula come in because it hadn’t moved in weeks and the owners were unsure if it was still alive. As spiders don’t have a pulse or respiration to check like mammals, we had to get creative. We put the spider in a hospital box with a damp paper towel and a heating pad underneath. After an hour or so, I walked to the back area and peeked in at it, and it appeared there were now TWO tarantulas! The spider had been trapped in its hard, dry exoskeleton for quite some time, but with the added heat and humidity was able to “pop its top” and climb out. It was frisky and happy to be free, and the owners were thrilled. It had even begun to grow back a leg it had previously lost!
3. What is one piece of advice you would give new pet owners?
Do your research first before making an impulse buy. A prepurchase consult or even just perusing our website can help you understand the animal’s dietary, housing, and other needs, common illnesses and conditions, and other aspects which may cause you unexpected anxiety or expense should you discover them after you are already invested. We can help you determine what types of enclosures, bedding, food, and toys will be most appropriate for your pet, as well as if the pet is going to be a good fit for you and your lifestyle.
4. What is the most rewarding part of working at Exotic Vet Care?
Helping our clients heal their sick and injured pets and watching the pet’s condition improve over time with good care. We have seen some truly miraculous transformations, and we appreciate our clients’ dedication to their pets’ needs. We build lasting relationships here, and come to feel deeply for our clients and patients.
5. How are you staying healthy and sane through the COVID-19 pandemic?
I feel so blessed to be working with an amazing group of people who are so onboard with team safety. We are dedicated to curbside care and even within the building we are masked constantly to keep each other safe. I feel so lucky to be able to come to work every day because it gets me out of the house and I get to see my wonderful staff, who I love like family. I haven’t seen anyone else since March except my husband and two kitties, who are enough to keep me busy. We are watching a lot of Netflix and eating way too much delivery!
